Topology is a relatively new branch of mathematics; most of the research in topology has been done since 1900. Topology is a branch of pure mathematics that deals with the abstract relationships found in geometry and analysis. The word "topology" means the study of surfaces. Topologists attempt to understand shape and space without an explicit measure of distance or size. Sub-fields of topology contain General Topology or Point Set Topology, Combinatorial Topology, Algebraic Topology and Differential Topology.
