The students of Counselling Psychology faculty promote counselling as an effective, viable means of assisting individuals throughout the life span. The counselling psychologist, regardless of his or her theoretical stance or work setting, functions as a change agent who is sensitive to and knowledgeable about the range of human development reflected in individual differences and cultural and linguistic diversity. The practice of Counselling Psychology is based on theory and research, an understanding of ethical practices, and a set of professional and interpersonal skills.
Counselling psychologists work in a variety of settings, providing various services to different client populations. Some are employed in colleges and universities as teachers, researchers and service providers (e.g., in university counselling centers). Others work in independent practice, providing counselling, assessment and consultation services to individuals, couples, families and organizations. Still others work in community mental health centers, VA hospitals and other medical facilities, health maintenance organizations, rehabilitation agencies, and business and industrial organizations.
