Considerd a sub branch of fine arts, a degree in book illustration deals with the art of drawing to illustrate the book. Since illustration need more than a degree that is creativity and the ability to understand the context of the book and summarize it into a single drawing or image. Usually the book illustrators have specific degree that allows them to take courses regarding fine arts techniques that usually include illustration techniques, drawing, and the use of computer technology for the artistic purposes. In addition student enrolled in the program will take up courses of philosophy, science, history and mathematics, these courses are necessary to interpret the hidden concept behind the book for better illustration purposes.
As for the career choices, most illustrators work as a freelancer or set up their own firm, while a considerable number of illustrators chose to work with a book, magazine or comic publishing firm with a fixed salary or the project based royalty.
